The Alabama Crimson Tide football team represents the University of Alabama in NCAA Division I-A college football, competing as a member of the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Alabama is one of the most storied programs in college football history, claiming 12 national championships and having been coached by the legendary Bear Bryant for 25 years. Alabama has also recorded 25 conference championships, 21 SEC championships, 54 post-season bowl game appearances, 30 bowl game victories , and 28 ten-win seasons, each an NCAA record. Alabama leads the SEC West Division with its 5 appearances in the SEC Championship game. The Associated Press (AP) ranks Alabama 4th in its All Time Final AP Poll. With 780 wins over 112 years of football, Alabama ranks 5th all-time in win-loss records in the NCAA.
Alabama plays its home games at Bryant-Denny Stadium, located on-campus in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
On January 3, 2007, Nick Saban accepted a formal offer worth US$32 million guaranteed for 8 years to be the next Crimson Tide head coach. Saban was previously the head coach the of Miami Dolphins of the NFL and he has also coached at Louisiana State University, Michigan State University, and University of Toledo. Preceding Saban as head coach of the team was Mike Shula, a former Tide quarterback, who was fired on November 27, 2006 after a 6-6 regular season.
National Championships
Alabama's 12 national championships are validated by the NCAA in their list of past Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I FBS) National Champions. Prior to 1945, national champions were declared by numerous organizations and associations, including the National Championship Foundation (NCF), Helms Athletic Foundation, Dunkel, Houlgate, Litkenhaus, and the College Football Research Association (CFRA). Since 1936, the AP Poll has been the most widely-circulated national championship selector. The Coaches' Poll has also been widely recognized since 1945. Since 1998, the national championship has been bestowed by the Bowl Championship Series.
In addition to the 12 national championships officially recognized by the University of Alabama, the Official NCAA Football Records Book also recognizes Alabama as producing 5 additional championships. However, these are not claimed by the university since they were awarded by lesser foundations, such as Sagarin, and Berryman polls, respectively. The "other Five" were awarded in 1945, 1962, 1966, 1975, and 1977. |
